Founders not Followers, NYC: Fernanda Petrini
A ceramic connoisseur, plant enthusiast and dear friend, who has by far the best looking home in Brooklyn. She is all types of chic and makes a damn good Brazilian Ice Tea. Let her take you on a journey of a slow and simple life, but yet the most aesthetically pleasing at the same time.
Name: Fernanda Petrini
Occupation/Creative outlet: Business owner / Ceramicist.
Grampo is a project that I started in my native Brazil. In Portuguese, "grampo" means "bobby pin," which were always scattered all over my grandmother's house, and "garimpar" has the meaning of prospecting or panning for gold. Studio grampo is a combo of the vintage clothing that I’ve collected over the years and hand-built ceramics made here in Brooklyn.
I’m also a partner at Beco Bar, this beloved Brazilian botequim in Williamsburg, where I’ve been working for the past 5 years.
Hobbies: Gardening and...ceramics!
What was the first thing you did this morning: Had a brief talk with my cat Carlitos that always sleeps above my head. Then right to the kitchen to get some caffeine in my body and start my day.
What are your 3 Go To skincare products: Thayers Which Hazel and The Ordinary co. face moisturizer are my daily combo. I tend to find products that work for my skin and stick with them for a long time.
What is your favourite form of exercise: I do Yoga once a week and bike everywhere (when the nyc weather allows it..)
How do you relax when you feel stressed or tense: Pranayama breath followed by a glass of wine usually does it!
Do you have a morning or evening routine: My evenings are not a pattern since I work late some nights but my mornings tend to be pretty consistent, I wake up 8:30 every day, go through my e-mails, news, house stuff, then usually got to the studio to work on my ceramics, sometimes prepping clothes to shoot for my Etsy page or prepping for any upcoming flea markets or orders.
What is your Favourite recipe to cook: I love making fresh pasta! There is this shrimp habanero sauce that me and my husband accidentally invented once in Hawaii and became a staple - it’s got quite a kick to it which we love.
What are your 3 favourite kitchen ingredients: A good olive oil is essential, shallots & garlic is everything!
What would your advise be for someone who is about to start their own business: Don’t be scared of change, there is no final result, there is no failing, just keep trying different things. I believe it’s about improving always and getting to know what suits you/your business, which might not be exactly what you were thinking in the first place
Favourite place in the world: My house or whatever I call home at that moment
Favourite song/artist that makes you feel relaxed: Neil Young
Favourite item of clothing: Nothing like a vintage pair of Levi’s
Favourite book: Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
Favourite podcast: I like WTF with Marc Maron. The pitch of his voice usually annoys me but he interviews a bunch of cool, interesting people from old school punk legends to Obama.
Go to Spotify playlist: I usually just like to listen to full records on my record player at home.
But I made this playlist a while ago and was obsessed with it, but unfortunately I ruined for myself by playing it too much at work but still a good playlist, it’s called “Sagittarius by Moonlight”
