How To: Make your own Wax Wraps
Back in May, Ireland approved the vote to ban 10 single use plastics by 2021 - Well done our Irish isle!! These 10 things are what are found most frequently washed up on the beaches that surround our beautiful country. The 10 things are cigarette butts, bottles, bags, food containers, balloons, cups and lids, sweet wrappers, cutlery and straws, cotton buds and sanitary products.
Although not mentioned on the list of 10 things, we should always be looking to go that extra mile to care for our planet. Cling film, is a huge contributor to single use plastics. One fabulous way to save you from having to use cling film is wax wraps!! Wax wraps are simply cotton fabric with beeswax melted on them, to allow the fabric to hold a shape over a bowl, or a fruit. They are super easy to make at home, or you can simply purchase them online, this is one of many places to purchase wax wraps.
To make your own wax wraps you will need:
Cotton fabric cut into the sizes you want, depending on your own bowls at home.
Scissors
A block of wax or wax pellets
Old jar
Paint brush
Baking paper
Sauce pan
Water
Hob
Oven
*If you use wax pellets, you can skip Step 3-6, and sprinkle the pellets on top of the cotton on the baking paper, and tray and place directly into oven, for 4 minutes*
